    Re: Sky Broadband

Well, at least Sky has stopped killing and re-incarnating people, as they did me, however not sure the torture of correspondance with them is any better?

As for Tiscali my advice Wide Berth and and Barge Pole come to mind,

Good luck I am too looking for an alternative!

          Re: Sky Broadband

Why does everybody have to use internet service providers who shout long and loud as to how good they are in expensive advertising campaigns? Of course if you use cable, you are a bit restricted as to who you can use, but with a normal telephone line then "up to" 8 meg broadband is available from a number of providers. I use www.plus.com. I have been using them since broadband became available in my area and have never had a problem. They claim to be the provider of choice by a number of computer magazines. They have a U.K call centre and a sophisticated systemof processing e-mail queries which invariably receives a prompt response. On one occasion, several years ago this system didn't work too well, so I sent a query by snail mail with all the appropriate snide comments concerning modern technology. Within two days I received a cheery, jovial telephone call from a senior manager who apologised, explained what had caused the problem and then proceded to resolve my query. They will also give you all the necessary settings to configure your own wireless/modem if you don't want their offer of a free one and this considerably reduces your minimum contract period. Uswitch and the other price comparison sites also provides details of alternative internet service providers so why not look there before taking the plunge again?

            Re: Sky Broadband

PlusNet plc is owned by BT. I might as well join BT than PlusNet, in addition I object to their whiney protestations about why they do not offer as much as other providers yet charge more money - typical BT tactics.

I have about a month, although Sky have already provided me with my MAC code, so I will keep looking.

              Re: Sky Broadband

You are quite correct, however I have been using them for long before BT became financially involved. There has been no change in management practices and so far their has been no outward sign of BT involvement in their business. They charge much lower rates than B.T. and when BT's name was linked with some other large scale broadband providers who intended to install snooping software from an organisation called "Phorm", Plus categorically denied ever even considering the introduction of such software. The idea of this software was to "give you a better browsing experience" by snooping every website you visited and as such by targetting personally selected advertising in the users direction. Such activities, which BT would appear to possibly have introduced in certain areas on a trial bsis without giving their customers a choice is being investigated by the OFT as it may be illegal. Some other major broadband providers did, or intend to give their customers a choice during the trials.
Of course, Plus are not the only broadband provider out there who give much better service than that you have received and there are plenty of sites which give you comparisons between them to help you chose. As I said initially, most people opt for the big I.S.P.s who shout loud and long with their huge advertising budgets how good they are. If you look for them there are other ISP's who don't have this kind of money to waste but just sit there waiting for their reputation for good service to bring customers to their door.

                Re: Sky Broadband

Thanks for the information. As I said, I do have some time to keep looking and I will not automatically go to BT - there was a reason I left them in the first place.
