  • Noisy Electrical Meter

    Hi Everyone,
Would love some advice if there is anything we can do to rid ourselves of this annoyance.

2 years ago we had our meter changed to a smart meter. Since then it makes a high pitched whining sound that you can hear pretty much throughout our flat, but especially so when it's quiet.
It's not loud, but it is annoying. As a homeowner do we have a right to a quiet and peaceful enjoyment of our home?

The energy company sent out an engineer who agreed there is a noise, but said lots of meters have this.

I would suspect the energy company, as a result of his visit and acknowledging there is a noise, know the meter is working properly and will do everything to avoid taking on this problem.

If they companies were found to need to change noisy meters, it would be very costly, so I imagine they will fight tooth and nail to prevent this.

    Any thoughts?

    Hi Dan

    Welcome to LB

Write a letter of complaint, state even their 'own engineer says there is a high pitch sound'.
Ask them to change it, if they don't ask them for a 'deadlock' letter, then you can take
your complaint to the Services Ombudsman. You may need to get an independent
expert to carry out an inspection.

Check if anything near by might be interfering with it.

Update thread when you get a response.
