Hi asking for someone. They moved out of a rental flat March 2018 and when they did updated their meter reading on the app and called their energy suppliers npower to tell them they are moving and were told to pay the last bill which will update on the app and they did, pay on the app as usual then uninstalled it.
2 yrs later 2020 they happen to see on their credit report npower is claiming they owe them approx £3000! They contact npower and tell them they have moved out. Another yr later 2021 and eon-next start chasing them and send debt collectors after them.
They understand they should've more rigorously checked that npower closed the account but they had other issues with covid appearing and dismissed it because they could prove they didn't live there the while time the bill was for so didn't think anyone could take it further.
But eon wouldn't remove the charges or debt collectors so they contacted Ombudsman whom ruled in their favour and ordered eon to remove the bill and debt collectors and close the account as they clearly were not living at the property during that time. They accepted the resolution.
After some weeks eon said they had "fully implented the resolution" but they hadn't. Debt collectors continue to contact them by phone txt and email. The only thing eon did is reduce the bill by approx £2000 from April 2019 onwards. All the charges of over £1500 are for the period prior to April 2019 but eon won't say from what dates exactly they are trying to bill them.
Eon have repeatedly tampered with the meter readings during this time to inflate the bill. Even started calling them actual readings and not estimated then admitted nobody had been to the property in question to find out whom exactly lived there now and couldn't provide proof of these "actual readings". Eon also haven't provided proof they called off debt collectors except a tiny edited cropped bit of paper with no real info or details on it regarding anyone.
They asked eon for the last bill and statement with meter readings they took from npower back in 2018. Eon refused saying they couldn't without an SAR. They requested an SAR over 2 months ago in January but didn't receive anything and eon have been ignoring requests for updates since.
They contacted the ombudsman again with proof they are still being harassed by eon and debt collectors and are awaiting response. They have also lodged a complaint with the ICO but the website said it could take upto 3 months to hear back.
In the meantime what they specifically want to know is is there any way to hold of debt collectors or bailiffs should they come to their door? They didn't live at the property for the period the bill is for so they don't understand how this has gotten so far and how eon are getting away with this? Surely this is fraud and criminal harassment?
They've checked and some solicitors will get involved but they can't afford them at all. What action can they themselves take to stop this? They have a tenancy agreement proving they lived elsewhere from April 2018. Statements from npower would also prove that they always paid all their bills and what periods they were for and the exact meter readings when leaving the property. That's why eon won't provide them.
