  • 3 wheels, licence type and insurance

This is something I can't seem to get a straight answer for. When getting insurance quotes for my Robin (I have full cat A licence), and an insurer states 'Full UK' with a cat A being the required cat for a 3 wheeled vehicle (full cat B holders get A with restriction code 79 added), am I fine just declaring a full licence as that is what I have for the vehicle class they are offering insurance for?

I don't want to take out a policy then at some point be told I lied on the form for declaring I have full entitlement for the vehicle they are offering insurance for. I have previously held insurance with a specialist insurer however I would like to take my no-claims back over to a bike policy after letting the cover lapse, and their prices without NCD are significantly higher than a general car insurer. I'd also like to build up some NCD on a car policy.

In the past I have had all sorts of crap from insurers on the phone like "we can insure you as a provisional licence holder (no they can't as a Robin is too powerful for provisional motorcycle entitlement) but you need to be supervised".

I had this problem in relation to freight insurance. Got policies that were not applicable to the type of goods movement, because the people giving out the policy and meant to be the "experts" were 2bit salesmen with 0 attention span.

I ended up contacting a org that specializes in just advising on insurance after contacting the underwriter for the particular broker who advised where to go - the org in question does not deal direct at all just gives advice. I think it was BIBA, they were very helpful and identified the exact name and type of policy that would be needed as well as identified potential providers.

Might be worth a call, unless you get more specific answers on here.
