  • How do solicitors charge? I have to find a solicitor for my son for divorce

    Dear All
As per my previous posts, my son and his wife have separated and his wife engaged a solicitor early on, and has since made various threats about money and child access, and while my son has been discussing matters with her directly he now feels he needs a solicitor to help fight his corner. So I am trying to find one local to him - he lives in Rochester Kent - and while there appear to be quite a few, some have very poor reviews. I have just spoken to one firm and spent nearly half an hour on the phone providing information about my son and his wife, and am now waiting for a solicitor to call me back, to explain charges because person I spoke to was not able to throw any light on that. She just said they'd charge 750 plus vat for straightforward divorce plus £550 court fee. The lady I spoke to asked how much my son earned adding that it is relevant as she wanted to know how he was going to fund paying a solicitor. Fair enough, but I want to make sure I find him one that knows what they're doing and is not going to exploit situation unnecessarily. He has chatted with a mediator an experienced lady, who I imagine will help at some point, but before that he's going to need a solicitor. Based on my research, which to be fair hasn'tbeen extensive, I cannot find a guide to solicitor charges. One firm says they charge £150 plus vat for initial consultation. Is that average? I just want to get a rough idea of how much he should be paying. Thank you very much.
