    The enormous volume of business transacted round the clock through the UK's banks is highlighted in the British Bankers' Association's latest Abstract of Banking Statistics, published today.
    The 25th annual Abstract from the BBA provides a wealth of information on the activities of the UK's banks during the calendar year 2007, including figures on banks' assets, lending volumes, mortgages, current accounts and cards even the current numbers of ATMs.
    The figures show that in every 10 minutes of every day of the year:
    • 40,000 people use the internet to check their bank balance or statement; 3,700 pay their bills online;
    • 46,000 people visit ATMs, withdrawing over £3.2 million in cash;
    • 33,000 purchases are made using credit cards by UK card holders;
    • clearing systems process 23,000 cheques, 105,000 automated payments and 132,000 plastic card payments; and
    • banks earn £266,000 for the UK's balance of payments and pay £170,000 into the Exchequer directly through taxation.

      Unarranged overdrafts
      Consumer campaigners initially treated the announcement of our
      court case as a spanner in their works rather than a constructive
      step. However, the court case is an essential step towards
      resolving the Office of Fair Trading’s complaint against the fees
      customers pay for exceeding their agreed overdraft limits.
      The three-week hearing before Justice Andrew Smith started
      in January, complete with protesters and massed media
      outside the court room. The issues before him were: whether
      the litigant banks’ and building society’s terms and conditions
      were in plain, intelligible English (he ruled they were, or were
      largely so); whether the fees levied were in fact penalties (he
      ruled they were not, but were instead fees for a service); and
      whether the matter could be subjected to a fairness test under
      the 1999 Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations, or
      UTCCRs (he ruled it could, although this did not mean the fees
      were unfair). This last point is currently subject to an appeal.
      Meanwhile, members continue to endure criticism and much
      misleading comment. Nevertheless the court case represents
      the swiftest way to resolve these issues for customers.
