  • Shoplifting at Tesco and record handling for future employment

I am embarrassed to say I got caught eating a product at tescos I did not pay for today, which I completely forgot about, long story short, the police didn't get involved and they took the RLP route and said a letter will come through soon. I know most members advise against paying these scammers but I feel far too embarrassed and I'm not sure how it will affect my credit score, and although I'm pretty sure it was an empty threat, the security person at tesco told me that if I don't pay they send him rounf to collect the money.

My question and main concern is, how will the record they keep affect my future employment with Tesco themselves? Since I am a pharmacist and Tesco is a very big chain, would paying the RLP effectively prove that I'm guilty?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help, I will truly appreciate it

Oh gosh, I'm sure Tesco's do let people eat as they walk around the store so long as they keep the packaging and pay at the tills. I guess it's tricky if its a weight item though... but anyway, a forgetful mistake should of course be challenged if you go to leave the store without paying, but they seem to have forgotten some humanity ... '' Ah nuts, I forgot, here's the 55p " really should be fine enough. But anyway, if that's their policy, that's their policy and they take the cruddy reputation that goes with it.

"the security person at tesco told me that if I don't pay they send him round to collect the money. "

Utter rubbish, and quite threatening actually. RLP will send a few letters, then stop. I have never heard of them doorstepping anyone, ever. Their letters can be quite threatening ( theres a few examples at the top of the civil recovery forum so you're prewarned ) but they are toothless.

It wouldn't affect your credit file unless they took it to court and obtained a CCJ against you - which they won't ( they lost last time they tried ( in 2010 ) and haven't tried since). If they did take court action you'd defend strongly of course, but if you didn't feel up to it then you could pay it off within a month of judgment and not have it touch your credit file.

I don't know about Tesco's employment policy, presumably they do keep a list of people they pass to RLP, but whether that is called up when looking at potential employees I don't know, but it isn't something needs to be declared on any criminal record check when applying, the police haven't been involved, just the security guard decided to act like a plank. If you did apply to work within Tesco I really don't see it would be a problem - and paying RLP or not wouldn't make any difference.

....... and I thought Tesco were using DWF now. Perhaps it upto individual managers, or they haven't passed the news on to all their managers!

Good point Des. Be interesting to see who the pointless threat actually comes from.

I tried asking to pay for it, however the security man refused and said that it was too late. He said the invoice for the food will be included in the DWF. I was just wondering if I can find out any useful information (such as what they hold on me and how long they plan on holding this information), for example through the Freedom of Information act? I feel that in my case I didn't have the chance to adequately defend myself as I felt far too embarrassed and shocked at the time.

I just feel that it's unfair to have my career hindered over a silly matter whereby I couldn't explain or defend myself properly and to be labeled as a 'shoplifter'. As you can imagine in my line of work something like that paints a very bad image of me and show me to be untrustworthy.

not if they have scales that print off a barcode for the weight (we've done that with loose apples too)

Did he say RLP or DWF ? Doesn't hugely matter or make any difference just out of interest as they are two different companies.

Did the Security Guard say you were banned from the store ?

Do you currently work at Tesco in the Pharmacy or is it somewhere you are considering applying for in future ?

If you are concerned then yes you can send a SAR (Subject access request) to Tesco.

He didn't mention the particular company, he just mentioned that it was a civil recovery.

The security guard said I had a 6 month ban from that particular store.

I don't currently work for Tesco but I may possibly want to in the near future.

What would I include in the SAR and also if I obtain the information that I want will I be able to appeal it if I feel like it may hinder my future career with them?
