Update - I emailed a reply to their last letter threatening legal action with :

'Thank you for your letter dated 28 March 2017.

I deny any debt to your client. My reasons include its failure to meet the requirements of the Protection of Freedoms Act and
inadequate, poorly lit and confusing signs.
I did not respond to the original letter because it failed to meet the conditions for keeper liability in Schedule 4 of the POFA 2012. As such, the keeper is not liable in law and this will be shown in defence should you decide to pursue the matter.'

...and have heard nothing since! Thanks again for the advice.
