    Cool Let's Fight Back Against Scammers and Spammers

    It's time we fought back against these dreadful criminals
    We can report them.
    We can waste their time.
    We can protect ourselves against such scammers.
    We can warn others of what happens.
    Let's do everything we can to prevent them from scamming more people.

    Do post your story of dealing with scammers, especially any way of fighting back.

    Annoy Cold Callers By Wasting Their Time
    There’s lots of ways you can waste their time
    · Pretend you can’t hear very well and make them repeat each statement several times
    · Pretend to be stupid and misunderstand everything they say
    · Repeat back to them each thing they say
    · Ask their opinion on any soap opera or reality TV series that you watch then regale them with how wonderful the programme is
    · Pretend to cry – tell them you’ve broken up with your true love and are heart broken (good for any budding actors) and pour out any anger you’re feeling.
    · Pretend you know the caller and invent a whole back story for last time you saw them and refuse to accept that they don’t know you

    Any of these tricks are likely to have the caller put down the phone but it depends how well you play your part. So enjoy yourself, be creative and waste their time.

    Stop Cold Callers by Threatening Legal Action
    Remember, they called you uninvited – there is no need to be polite. These people can be the bane of your life with repeated calls.
    Refer them to non-existent legislation that they may be breaking. Anything that doesn’t follow their script is disconcerting to a cold caller and an authoritative voice warning them of law breaking should stop them immediately.
    For example,
    My number is registered with the telephone preference service. By calling me you are breaking section 117 of the Telecommunications Act 2012. You are personally liable to a fine of up to £5,000 for a first offence or imprisonment for further offences.
    I suggest you get your bags packed.
    Goodbye.
    This is not true of course – it is just intended to stop the cold caller from pestering you.

    You missed one on cold callers. The old trick of saying that you have someone at the door and putting the phone down and waiting about 20 minutes then see if they are still on the phone and apologise for it and then before they get to the end repeat

    Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

    It doesn't matter where your journey begins, so long as you begin it...

    My late mother used to use a whistle if they were persistent... Didn't seem to receive a repeat call

    I don’t get any cold calls as we have a privacy package that bars all callers who withhold their number which includes any switchboards but when I did get pestered I often asked them what they were wearing……Usually got them worried.
    As many of their dialling systems are automatic they have no idea where they are calling so a couple of times I asked if they realised where they had called. When they said no, I implied they had gotten through to some sort of secret place like GCHQ and I had to take all their details as a matter of national security. Felt bad when I made one girl cry.

    Annoy the Cold Callers by Asking Personal Questions
    These callers have a script to follow – it tells them the questions to ask and how to respond to your answers.
    But they don’t have a script for when you ask other questions – personal questions.

    So, you could for example, tell them you are busy at the moment but will call them back at home that evening and ask for their home phone number. You won’t get it – unless they fancy you of course.
    If they say they can’t give out a home number then that leads in to the comment “I presume you don't want anyone bothering you at home, right? Now you know how I feel!"

    Or how about this example:-
    “while I've got you on the line, I’ll just ask you a couple of very brief questions?
    Where are you based?
    Who do you work for?
    What computer systems do you use?
    What is your name?
    What is the name of your manager?
    etc.

    It’s amazing how people who want to know so much about you are so unwilling to give you information about themselves.
    So, annoy the cold callers by asking them personal questions they don’t want to answer.

    Confuse the Cold Caller
    Cold callers have a script to follow – a set of questions and expected answers.
    If you behave unexpectedly – they don’t know what to do and will often give up i.e. put the phone down.
    There are endless things you can do to confuse them, such as
    1. Keep a take-away menu by the phone and start reading it out – place an order and ignore anything they say – just keep reading it out. E.g. I’d like to order 3 spring rolls followed by the Peking Duck with egg fried rice and 2 portions of crispy noodles and some of that seaweed stuff . Plus … and so on.
    2. Say ‘I don’t speak English’ to whatever they ask until they put the phone down.
    3. Invent your own religion and try hard to convert them. I’m glad you called today as I have the good news of the 3rd coming of Quixacoatl to tell you about. Now, Quixacoatl created the earth in 5 minutes and he’s due back tomorrow to collect all of the believers. And so on.
    4. Say Thank you for calling the PPI hotline – we can get your thousands of pounds back. I just need you name, address and bank details first. You’ll hear the phone slam down
    Any unexpected behaviour will do the trick – so confuse them.

    Before we registered on the Telephone Preference Service, I used to have several strategies for dealing with cold callers. One of my favourites was telling them they had rung a crime scene and I needed their number for further action! That stopped that call dead.

    These people called you, uninvited, so you're free to say anything you want to confuse then, annoy them or just get rid of them.
    I know they're just trying to make a living - but that living should not include phoning people who don't want their calls and certainly not calling people registered on the Telephone Preference Service.

    Cheeky Replies to the Scammers
    Have you ever been tempted to send a cheeky reply to the absurd scam emails we all receive?
    Most of us just delete them but author James Veitch, , was inspired to play the scammers at their own game. He spent two years emailing back, stringing the scammers along in lengthy conversations while having fun at their expense. These exchanges form the basis of his new book Dot Con. Here’s a good example
    A STRANGER OFFERING 50 KILOS OF GOLD

    From: Solomon Oddonkoh
    Hello Mr Veitch, How are you doing? Hope all is well with you. I have an interesting business proposal I want to share with you

    [Some more emails then]
    You can be able to work with us in London as receiving agent? We shall be shipping Gold and Rough Diamonds to you to distribute to buyers on our behalf, and you will earn10% in cash worth of any goods you distribute. We can start with 50kgs as trial shipment. The worth should be about $5 million. I await your reply as soon as possible. Regards, Solomon

    Winifred says When I get a cold call, I say 'I am not buying anything'.
    They usually say 'I am not selling anything'
    So I say, 'then why are you calling invading my private time. Take me off your list'

    One caller was very determined.
    I’d told him that I wasn’t buying anything but he persisted and in the end I just put the phone down.
    Then he had the cheek to ring back and complain that I was rude to him.
    So I said 'I did not give you my telephone number. I told you I was not interested in anything you had to sell, My home time is very valuable to me. But you would not listen so I put the phone down in hopes that you would finally get the message'

    I hope he has got the message.

    I might try my cousin’s approach instead. When he gets a cold call, he says 'just a minute', puts the phone down and walks away.
    This wastes their phone bill and annoys them.

    There are several big double glazing companies well known for sending people around to knock on everyone’s door. Usually with special offers and a hard sell.
    I had yet another visit from such a salesman and complained to him that two of his colleagues had knocked within the last few months. Don’t they talk to each other? He had no explanation and clearly didn’t care – just went into his sales patter.
    As long as you are still on the doorstep they believe you can be sold to and hence carry on with the pitch. Pathetic.
    I complained to their head office that it was ridiculous to have such frequent visits and couldn’t they organise themselves better. I was surprised to get a message back apologising and saying that my address was now on their ‘do not knock’ list so I should never be bothered by them again.
    I find it hard to believe that but maybe it’s true.
    Anyway, if you have problems with these type of companies knocking at the door – make sure to complain to their head office and demand they stop knocking at your door.

    BT Engineer Charges Cold Caller
    Richard Herman was plagued by calls from a PPI cold calling company. He asked them to stop calling him but the calls continued. So, next call he warned them that if they called again he would bill them for his time at £10 per minute.
    The Nuisance Calls continued and he kept a log and recordings of all Nuisance Calls about PPI received. He informed them that would base his bill for the use of his telephone electricity and time dealing with their calls.
    He submitted a bill top the company (PPI Claim line Limited) for £195 which was 19.5 minutes of his time answering and dealing with the unwanted calls.
    Even when the company denied making the PPI Nuisance Calls to him it didn’t deter him. He took them to court, but the case didn’t continue.
    They settled out of court for £220 and paid him.
    Hooray for Richard Herman.
    Make them pay for wasting your time.

    Me: What do you want? (in a bored ‘heard it all before’ tone of voice)
    Caller: My name is Natasha and I’m calling from Lifestyle Choices. I would just like you to help me please with answers to a few questions. It will only take 2 minutes.
    Me: (now sounding friendly) So, you’re Natasha and you’re from Lifestyle Choices. Do you do a lot of surveys Natasha?
    Caller: If you could just answer a few questions Sir.
    Me: Natasha, Do you work for Lifestyle Choices or are you just contracted to them?
    Caller: I work for Lifestyle Choices. If you could answer a few questions Sir.
    Me: So, Lifestyle Choices – what do they do.
    Caller: Can you answer some questions please Sir.
    Me: Of course, after you answer my questions. Now, where was I. Oh Yes, I remember. You were going to tell me about Lifestyle Choices.
    Natasha disconnects.

    Pre-Paid Return Envelopes

    Do you get those letters from finance companies saying you have been pre-approved for a loan or a credit card?

    Often they have pre-paid return envelopes. Now that’s an opportunity too good to miss.
    Send it back to them complete with whatever other sales letters you got that day (don’t leave your address on anything though) or send them back folded sheets of newspaper or any rubbish to hand.
    Or you can be creative – fill the envelope with confetti or shredded sales leaflets.
    They pay the postage whatever the contents. It’s their envelope – you’re just returning it to them. If we all return the envelopes then perhaps they’ll stop sending out the stupid letters that we don’t want.

    Susan says “My response to cold callers and scammers varies depending on my mood… Sometimes I just put the phone down. If I stay on the line, I always ask their name and I never confirm my name”.

    “I never swear at them because it’s pointless – they’re just trying to earn money.”

    “Once I had a guy ring me up telling me I had won some prize and all I had to do to get the prize was answer a simple question. It was obviously a scam so I played along.”

    Caller: What is the capital of France?
    Me: Louisiana – that’s French.

    Caller: No, the capital of France.
    Me: Oh a city – New Orleans.

    Caller: No. Try again. What’s the capital of France?
    Me: Luxembourg – that’s in Europe. Right?

    I answered Egypt, New York – anything that came to mind.
    In the end, even he was laughing.

    Of course I didn’t get the non-existent prize, but I did waste ten minutes of his time.

    Valerie Deals with Cold Callers


    Valerie says she got fed up with cold callers years ago and signed up for the Telephone Preference Service. This led to a big reduction in the number of calls but she still does receive them.


    They seem to call her mostly around 6 pm – they wait till they think you’re home from work and some even call her around 8 am when she’s having breakfast. She had three callers in one afternoon.


    Valerie pays the extra money each month for caller Id on her phone so she can see who’s calling.


    For cold callers, she keeps a very loud whistle by the phone and if it’s a cold caller they get a good blast of that.


    If the whistle isn’t to hand, then she simply says ‘I’ll just get Mrs J.. for you’ and leaves the phone off the hook so it continues to cost the caller.


    Cold callers can be a real nuisance, but I bet Valerie doesn’t get the same caller twice.

    Pete Deals With Cold Callers

    W. says her boss Pete doesn’t take to cold callers wasting his time.


    For example:-


    A call from someone claiming to be in computer support: I want to talk with you about your computer.


    Pete: No. I don’t want to talk to you about my computer. Goodbye.


    A minute later, another caller from the same company: My colleague just phoned to talk with you about your computer


    Pete: Your colleague obviously doesn’t understand English –I said NO! What part of NO doesn’t he get? and slammed the phone down.


    Pete’s philosophy is don’t waste time on these callers.


    Another time he told a caller to stop wasting his time and she told him to be more polite.


    Pete said’ Alright I’ll be polite – please bleep off”


    Another time, Pete wanted to have more fun and started a sales pitch on selling the caller life insurance. That really confused the caller.


    Don’t waste your time on theses callers unless you want to have fun confusing them.

    Harry Bombards The Cold Caller With Questions


    Harry didn’t like being pestered by cold callers and didn’t like being asked lots of irrelevant questions.


    And he figured the cold callers wouldn’t like it either.


    So, as soon as they started into their scripted questions, he bombarded them with his own questions.


    “Who are you”


    “Why are you phoning me?”


    “How did you get my phone number?”


    “Why are you wasting my time?”


    “Who said you could phone me?”


    “Why should I answer your questions?”


    “Who told you to phone me?”


    The cold callers usually recognise they are losing this battle and give up.

    Julie Deals with Cold Callers By Being Caring

    Julie is a committed Christian and does not want to make life difficult for cold callers.

    Her natural response to such callers is to talk with them.

    After their opening pitch, she asks something such as

    “I’m curious, why did you choose this job?

    Or “Shame, it must be really hard calling people up with a marketing script all day long”

    And she is genuinely interested in the answers.

    They do tend to end the call but if they stay on and start to talk then Julie takes the opportunity to tell them about her Christian beliefs and how that affects her life.

    When busy, Julie does just say No to callers and puts the phone down as most people do, but that doesn’t get your number taken off their calling lists so you will get more calls.

    The Magic Phone Number

    When buying something online or registering online there is usually a form to fill in of your details and quite often this insists on your telephone number even though you know it’s not needed.This is annoying, plus, you wonder what they will do with your phone number. Will they sell it or give it to third parties?, resulting in phone calls you don’t want.


    As the forms usually check the number is in the correct format, you need a real phone number to input.


    You can use 0333 88 88 88 88 (the last 8 doesn’t matter if the form only allows 11 digits.)
    When, they call, those cold call culprits will hear a short recorded message:-


    “trueCall38 is handling my calls. I prefer not to be contacted by phone, so please contact me via my email address. Goodbye!”
    Problem solved.


    Do companies block this number from being entered in the form? No, but if they do then Trucall38 have a display page “Wall of Shame” but none has done so thus far.
    Q. Why do companies ask for your phone number?
    They rarely really need it, and you don’t know what they are going to do with it. Interestingly, experts say that asking for a phone number can reduce the number of people who complete an online form by 25%. That’s a big loss.


    Of course, some companies sell their customers phone numbers on to other companies, so you don’t know who’ll get your number.
    Call Blocking
    The business behind the website trucall38.com have developed a call blocking device called Trucall that is reported to have been 95% successful in blocking nuisance calls. The technology has been licensed to BT and is incorporated in their BT8500 phone.
    Trucall claim that half a million people in the UK are now protected from nuisance phone calls by their technology.


    The guys behind Truecall say “We thought that everyone should have the opportunity to opt out of handing over their phone number unless they wanted to, so we launched the trueCall38 number – a completely free service”.
    If you don’t want someone to have your phone number – tell them 0333 88 88 88 88

    Joanne Has a Persistent Cold Caller


    Joanne isn’t bothered by scam and spam emails – just presses delete for anything at all dodgy.


    And she has fun with the Microsoft support scam phone calls that have been happening a lot recently.


    Joanne says “With ‘Microsoft’ scam calls I tend to feign interest. I go along with what they’re saying, let them deliver their speech and then say ‘Oh, I don’t have a pc’. Then they hang up, which I find amusing”.


    But she has had problems with a very determined cold caller – Zenith Windows.


    Constant calls annoyed Joanne and no amount of explaining she wasn’t interested would put them off. She tried a high pitched whistle – still they called.


    She threatened to report them for harrassment – no effect.


    She threatened a solicitor’s letter – still they called.


    She complained to their head office – no change.


    When she moved house, she assumed that would be the end of Zenith calls, but they tracked her down through a previous employer.


    Fortunately for Joanne, her ex employer realised the situation and denied knowing Joanne.


    When does cold calling become harassment?
    When does cold calling become threatening behaviour?


    Not good.
