  • Bad Reference from landlord.

My son was due to move from the flat he is in last week. He had given the landlord a months notice. The landlord had asked him why he was leaving, it was to be within walking distance of work. The landlord even asked him to stay and offered him a discount on his rent. Then when it came to moving this landlord had given a bad reference to the other agents and they said no to the tenancy.

    My questions,

Are landlords allowed to give bad reference?

Is there a law against giving bad references?

    Thanks.

I suppose it all depends on what has actually been said in the reference.
If he has made up allegations, that it could be libel.
Do you know that the reference is the actual reason that the tenancy was declined

The new agency have said that the tenancy was declined because of thr reference. My son has contacted them and will get a copy of what is in the reference tomorrow, so I will post it on here for you too pick over.

      Thanks.
