  • Grandparents access rights to grand children 2017

    Hi Everyone,

Just a quick question if anyone would be kind enough to help. I've recently heard from my ex partner's parents who have been estranged from our child for over 3 years. They are now seeking to gain access and citing that there is new law / legislation coming into effect in 2017 for grandparents that will afford them new legal rights in addition to the current system of court applications etc.

Does anyone know if there is a change in the access rights of grandparents to their grandchildren in 2017? If so please can you point me in the right direction for further research etc.

    Thanks and Merry Christmas!! mashappy:

    Hi and welcome

I believe those plans to change access "rights" for grandparents came to nought.
Ask the caring grandparents for a link to this new law!!

I've heard of no new laws either :noidea:

Thanks for your help des8. Not a great start for them it seems, a threat of legal action based on a lie, but great evidence of their probable negative influence on my child should they attempt anything.

Do you know something…..I really get fed up with the way people spout legal reasons why they should have access to human beings as if they were a ‘right of way’ or bit of property! Surely any grandparents would want a relationship forged out of love and mutual respect rather than legislation. How can anyone believe they are getting joy from time spent with children knowing they are there because they were forced into it.
Ask them if a such a law did eventually exist would they be delighted because your children have no choice but to spend time with them. This would result in hatred and resentment not a loving family bond. They should want to ‘get to know them’ not demand access. These bloody people!

            Well said!!

As a grandfather and great grandfather who has not seen two granddaughters for 10 + years we have never considered looking for " rights" to see them now we have quite frequent contact via face book and I suspect that as the girls come of age we will be having more and more contact with them.

Exactly -relationships have to be earned and worked at. They are not a legal right! Sorry a bit of an outburst there. The law is a wonderful thing and family law in particular but it should be used to ensure safety and protect not be a weapon used to wage war or inflict spiteful revenge. How can you claim to love a blood relation if you are not willing to work at building up a relationship -just wave a court order and TAH DAH! The grandchildren /children etc. will love you!
Memories of time spent with relatives should be full of picnics and ball games not courts and stringently applied time constraints. Do they not realise that children grow up and become adults? When they are no longer subject to ‘visitation rights’ they will resent every moment spent with these people and also appreciate the hurt inflicted on those who have truly loved and nurtured them.
