  • Info to send to local papers

The text below forms the basis of something that can be sent to local newspapers to offer them a story on a topical national issue (debt and charges) with a local interest (you) and local relevance (for readers who need our services). Please feel free to adapt it in any way to make it more relevant to you or your area, as it important that this is an approach by a local person, not seen as a mailshot from elsewhere. You should provide your address too, so that you are clearly a local resident.

Papers like a strong local angle, so you may want to focus any article around you rather than the actual issues. For this reason, you need to be sure that you are comfortable with the text that you send them as they might want to interview you, or even take your photo hoto: If you need any help please contact me by PM.

Before you approach any local newspaper, please check the list of papers already contacted to see that this has not already been done. If you decide to write to a paper please let me know immediately by PM, so that I can update the list in the other thread. It is very important that we do not send multiple details to the same paper.

If there is a result with the approach, please start a thread in this subforum titled by the name of the paper, providing details of the approach used and any publication that results. This will help other people to identify a good approach.

Thanks for your help with this – it really is appreciated as we need to get the word out and the punters need our help!

Free online consumer & debt advice available

    Dear Newsdesk

I am a local member of Legal Beagles, an Internet Consumer Forum that has helped hundreds of people across the UK with their debt and consumer problems over the past year. We are currently seeking to publicise our services to attract more local members, particularly in view of the effects of the credit crunch on the majority of consumers. The issue of bank charges is also very topical in view of the recent test case between the Office of Fair Trading and the main banks, which will be the subject of a case management conference on 22nd May, perhaps paving the way for mass repayment of bank charges.

The Legal Beagles Consumer Forum provides free advice and support on a range of issues including reclaiming bank charges, dealing with debt issues and stopping aggressive debt collectors. A growing number of members need help dealing with banks that are taking their benefit money in excessive charges and with the rise in mortgage interest rates, the forum is also expecting to receive more requests for help this year from people falling into arrears, or even being threatened with repossession. The site also provides specialist support in areas such as debt management, consumer issues, women’s issues and mental health, providing links to other agencies where appropriate.

I joined the site last year and it gave me all the information I needed to take control of my own affairs and to fight back at the way creditors were treating me. It’s now a privilege to help run the site and be able to work with my forum friends to provide a growing body of support to others who need the help. With the credit crunch looking set to get even worse, anyone with current or expected debt problems needs to start planning their financial affairs. Legal Beagles is the best place to start.

The forum offers a 24-hour service and a friendly and supportive environment, with free registration and services. It is staffed entirely by volunteers, who are able to provide advice based on their own knowledge and experience. To find out more, visit Legal Beagles - Consumer Rights Forum [make sure URL shows in your letter, not link] and register with a confidential username!

If you require any further information for this story, please contact me and I will be happy to help.

    Regards
