  • Want to live at my company's commercial premises and let out my house. Please advise.

Admin: I am re-posting this question here as it is more appropriate in this section.

    Hello all,
I am re-posting this question here as it is more appropriate in this section.

I own a commercial premises (warehouse) which I have let to my own company. The company is paying the business rates.
I am thinking of moving to the warehouse as I can convert one small room into living room and let the house out (to earn a bit of extra income) for 6 months period. Can some one please advise if:

    1) I can live at the commercial premises?
    2) Will I have to pay the council tax on top of business rates I am already paying?

    Your help is highly appreciated.
    bes regards

I'm not an expert but I think you will need planing permission . It may be easier if you can show that you need to live there for site security reasons.

Thanks. I intend to stay at the warehouse for about 6 months only. Would I still need planning permission?

It would not be legal without applying for partial change of use, and yes you would have to pay council tax and business rates. If you went ahead and did it without permission and tried to keep under the radar it would invalidate any insurances on the building and the council could serve notice on you at any point.
