  • Police vetting requirements for family members

I am looking for some advice with regards to the vetting process that Scottish Police use for checking criminal backgrounds for family members. I have been offered a job with Scottish Police but was asked by their vetting team to provide a history of where my family have lived since my parents were aged 16. My father works for an oil company so we have lived all over the world so when I came back to the member of staff with a list of the 14 countries my parents have lived (some of which myself and my brothers aswell) they said they need police certificates for both my parents for all of the 14 countries they have lived in since they were aged 16+. Some of these are countries that they lived at in the early 70s. I consider this a most unreasonable request and am now frustrated that this is going to prevent me from being allowed to start this job. They said that would not require anything further for myself and my brothers as we have all lived in UK for more than 10 years. My mother has lived in the UK since 2008 and my father has lived in UK since 2014. The vetting team said that they are no longer dealing with my application and it will be passed back to the Scottish Police HR team in the city I live in. Could anyone offer me some advice with regards to this issue? I think it is a most unfair request that they have made and do not know what I can do. Many Thanks ! Lisa

I would expect that you must supply all the info they want or you will not get the job.

The vetting process needs to be rigorous as you will know now .

vetting for many of these jobs is rigorous, as many of us went through them in the 60s, two types of vetting then = negative/Positive, which depended on which service/department you were entering

Hi thank you for your reply. What confuses me is a question and answer I found on the Police Scotland website with regards to vetting requests. Here is the section I am referring to which is taken from http://www.scotland.police.uk/recrui...ecruitment-qa:
        Q. I just read in an earlier post about clearance certificates if you have lived abroad. I have spent about 13 years living abroad as an expatriate because of my father’s job and then my husband’s job. I have been back in the UK for 4 years. Will I also need a clearance certificate for each country I have lived?
        A. No as you've been back in the UK for more than 3 years.

This relates to an applicant for a job as a police officer, I am have been offered a police staff job. This information makes me think that the request given could be incorrect possibly subject to an inexperienced staff member who has never come across a family that has traveled as much as mine. She is making this request of my parents for the places they have lived in, not myself. The answer given from this site relates what is needed for an applicant. Could you let me know what you think? Thanks Lisa

Re: Police vetting requirements for family members

Have you spoken about your concerns to the Scottish Police HR manager - As i believe that will make things much clearer for you. I do not see how any criminal act committed by your parents would effect your application in any case, if such was the case we'd have no police officers. You can not be held accountable for actions taken by your parents and certainly should not be treated detrimentally as a result of another persons actions past or present.
Please note that this advice is given informally, without liability and without prejudice. Always seek the advice of an insured qualified professional. All my legal and nonlegal knowledge comes from either here (LB),my own personal research and experience and/or as the result of necessity as an Employer and Businessman.

Thanks for your reply. The vetting team leader said that her team would no longer be dealing with my application now and it has been passed back to HR team so I will be contacting them on Monday to find out if I have any chance of actually being able to start this job. The information I shared from the Scottish Police website interested me as it contradicts the request that the vetting team made to me. Would be interested to know what the HR team say when I refer them to it.
