  • Transfer of £1,060 Personal Tax Allowance to spouses if earning less than £10,000

Just a reminder that if you want to transfer £1,060 of your personal tax allowance to your married spouse or civil partner---then you need to register now.

    http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/n...-212-year.html

Ok--a lot of the comments left on the above site are negative--but hey-ho--if it applies to you--it only takes 30 seconds to register and effectively earn £212 less in tax for the other partner

After registering-you get an E-mail informing you that you have registered and further details will be sent to you shortly.

Married couples and civil partners can register today for a tax break worth up to £212 a year.
In a bid to reward commitment and stay-at-home spouses, the Government is letting eligible couples switch a slice of their tax-free personal allowance between one another.
Everyone can earn up to £10,000 annually without paying income tax, which rises to £10,600 from April 6.

The new rule allows the ‘giver’, who must be a non-taxpayer, to switch £1,060 of it to their other half, an earner paying income tax at the basic 20 per cent on no more than £42,385 over the next tax year. This could save them up to £212 in tax.

Each party must also be born on or after 6 April 1935. The tax break won’t apply until April, but you can register now. The spouse preparing to transfer part of their allowance must register on a government website. Go to gov.uk/marriage-allowance.
There are thought to be more than four million married couples and 15,000 people in civil partnerships who could benefit.
The plans, announced in 2013, were published in last year’s Budget.

Just a reminder--if one of a married couple is earning less than £10,600 for 2015/2016 tax year-that you only have 15 days to take account of this tax break for this tax year

IE--transfer the £1,060 tax allowance to the higher earner (if you don't pay tax--graduated if you are a bit above that figure) & the recipient will get a rebate in tax of £1,060 @20% tax = £212 in March or April paypackets & pay proportionately lees tax for the ensuing 2016/2017 tax year

See Martin's article at MSE here:

Its so so simple --just apply at:

        Yep--me too

In middle of this 2015/2016 tax year I got a significant tax rebate one month & then a monthly reduction of around £17

So the emphasis is on that only 14 days left to get the full rebate of £212 in paypackets after revised tax code sent to employer--& then a monthly reduction thereafter

Just got my Tax Code Notice for 2016/2017 & it effectively increases the tax-free Personal Allowance of £11,000 to £12,100.
