  • Debt collectors coming but I think it's statute barred

Hi everyone I hope someone can clarify this for me please.
I had a barclaycard with outstanding debt on it years ago, barclaycard took money from my barclays current account (£2000) to cover it because id fallen behind but id had a bonus from work. This was 6 years ago last December I called them at the time to ask them to put some back as I was just going on maternity leave and they hadn't left me enough to even pay my rent. They refused. Anyway, that was the last contact I had with them. I'm still with barclays so they've known my address and I haven't had any letters from them since then. I assumed it was done with and the balance had pretty much been paid. Although there were small amounts taken from my current account that I couldn't account for since this time I haven't made a payment or spoken to them.
I now have Credit solutions and power2contact threatening me with doorstep collectors saying I owe barclaycard £1700. Is this statute barred as I haven't had contact for over 6 years? Or will the amounts that were taken without my knowledge be classed as payments?
thank you for any advice you can give

    Hi welcome!
For clarification a debt (simple contract) becomes statute barred in England And Wales if there has been no payment or unequivocal written acknowledgment of the debt in 6 clear years.
Is this debt on credit reference files? You could check Noddle (Call Credit) online it is free.

It will depend on the dates for those offset payments I think!

More advice will come from others but first doorstep collectors have no legal powers or rights you can tell them where to go and you don't have to give them your name even.

Do not contact anyone by phone or in writing without the advice others will give on here

I've checked on noddle and it is on there and it says one of the payments was last year. What is the best thing to do I can't afford to pay the full £1700 they've asked for. Is it best to contact barclaycard to organise a payment plan or is it too late for that now it's passed to a DCA? I've had no contact at all from BCard.

Did you make a payment last year if so for how much and to whom was the payment made?

It's there for the barclaycard debt, £69 last April. They must of taken it from my current account I didn't make the payment to them.
