  • house fixed up and sold 50/50

    Hello All,
My sister and I inherited our mum and dads house after they died, I moved in and lived there for several years. It needed work and I spent a good deal of money and time on it. I did not ask my sister for any money towards the upkeep, (not for any particular reason). Now the house has been sold (50/50) I have asked her if she could give me something towards the upkeep and costs etc, because we would not have got the extra sale value if I had not updated and maintained the house. Do I have a case here, and/or is there a law for this?

To be honest its a bit late, now you have sold the property. This should have been sorted out when discussing the sale and put in writing back then.

Am not sure if there is anything you could do now about it. As it looks like you agree to the sale at 50/50.

If your parents left the house equally to your sister and yourself, yet you remained living there and having the benefit of the property for several years before selling and she could ask to be compensated for that time she did not have the benefit of the money from the sale of the house, which could be the same or more than the additional sums you want from your sisters half of the proceeds of the sale. Just looking from both sides.
