Hi, Could someone please offer some advice. Yesterday I was advised that my role is being made redundant and the company is creating a new role. The new role has an extended title but is similar to my current role. When I was advised of the potential redundancy they provided me with the new Job Description, again similar to mine, it's the same target audience and will be talking about the same products. The company has been in (off the record) discussions with an external candidate about how he could fit into the business. My question is twofold - Do I need to interview for this role along with external candidates? If they employ this person instead of me, or intend to employ him/her, has the company appeared to have preselected a candidate, therefore could this result in unfair dismissal?
My role is being made redundant, do I need to interview for the new role?

Hi Scully, & welcome to Legal Beagles. (& thanks for the bump, Inca :tinysmile_grin_t
If the role is similar to your existing job, your employer may be on thin ice if you are not given the opportunity of going for it.

6. Suitable alternative employment
Your employer might offer you ‘suitable alternative employment’ within your organisation or an associated company.
Whether a job is suitable depends on:
- how similar the work is to your current job
- the terms of the job being offered
- your skills, abilities and circumstances in relation to the job
- the pay (including benefits), status, hours and location
Your redundancy could be an unfair dismissal if your employer has suitable alternative employment and they don’t offer it to you.
