Hello,
I left employment at my last company on 30 September. Before I left, my line manager had arranged for me to go on a one day training event which cost £354. This event took place on 23 August. I started employment with this company on 14 April, and throughout this time, I never saw or signed any contract or terms and conditions of employment. I had no idea that I would be responsible for repaying this fee if I left employment within one year, and this was not communicated to me verbally or in writing before I attended the event. No separate training agreement was given to me either.
Almost two months after I left, I have now received a letter in the post saying that I "left prior to settling the invoice as per your terms and conditions of employment" and to "arrange for payment of the attached invoice of £354 to be sent to us immediately". When I left, I had holiday entitlement left over which could have reduced this sum, but this option was not given to me either and I had no idea that I was responsible for paying the invoice at the time, otherwise I would never have attended.
The CEO of this company was reknowned for not settling his invoices, and I feel like they are trying to exploit me.I can't afford to pay this much, not with Xmas approaching.
What should I do?
