  • water bill sent from years ago

hi, hope someone can help. basically a "final notice" for a water bill was sent to my mums address for a supposed water bill from 2007 at an old address I used to live at (the bill lists all the names included of the previous occupants).

I called up Southern Water who said they had found a "gap" in our payments and are now chasing for it, and that they found my mums address in connection with me.

It was so long ago I dont know if I have records of things paid (am in contact with all the previous housemates, so have asked them too).

We found out that legally, water companies can backdate claims for payment up to 6 years.

What i don't understand is why this wasnt sent to us at the time if it was unpaid. In my mind, all bills were settled in 2007.

Where do i stand? Legally, can they send a "final notice" years down the line, when we haven't had any other notices before. How do we know this is a correct bill? Apparently, their search team found my address and sent this final notice to me, even though 2 of the old housemates are still at the address in question.

Please help! If there is a small chance we didn't clear our bills (which I cant imagine happening), surely it is the incompetence of the company to only alert us to it now, years later?

Woudl love to know where we stand on this.

Thanks alot for any help on this, it's been stressing me out
