All properties in the UK as with Electricity have a unique reference number attached to them for their gas supply. This is called an MPR. MPR stands for Meter point reference.
The gas network is set up slightly differently from electricity. With gas you have a transporter and a supplier. The transporter usually turns out to be national grid (formally transco) but, in some areas you have an independant gas transporter like united utilities or elf.
If you are supplied (as in the pipework and transportation of gas not the billing side) by an independant gas transporter your MPR will begin with a 74 or 75. If you are supplied by an independant gas transporter you will sometimes incur extra costs on top of your usual standing charges and unit price. This is set by the independant shipper in your area and thus passed on to the customer through their supplier. There is nothing you can do to avoid this charge if you live in an area where the transporter is independant, although I believe some suppliers waive this charge but they may well charge you slightly more standing charge.
Below is a list of numbers that you can contact to find out your MPR. Please note that if your transporter is independant then you cannot contact national grid, you will have to ring round the independant transporters to find out who your transporter is, they can also tell you like MPAS, who your supplier is.
