Default Criminal injuries compensation and benefit entitlement

Hi. Hoping I can get a definite answer. I have been awarded a rather large criminal injury compensation settlement and need advice to how this will affect my ESA benefit. The amount takes me over the £16000 allowance but wasn't sure if criminal injury compensation is exempt from this allowance. Any advice welcome. Thankyou.
