• Shoplifted and want to return the stuff

Hello,

my friend shoplifted perfumes from Debenhams a couple of days ago worth 200£, and now he is scared that they will check their inventory and know that there's perfumes missing and check their CCTV, especially that he bought some other stuff and paid with his credit card, he is afraid they that Debenhams will get his information from the credit card info.

he wants o rerun the stuff he didn't use them, but he is afraid they will call the police even with showing a good faith.

what should i tell him to do? he is scared and unable to think clearly. and i do know what to tell him, he is a good guy and never done that before. please help. thank you.

couldn't he just drop them off in a bag with no explanation?? Or post them with a letter of apology (no ID required)??

he thought of that, but then if they saw the CCTV and saw him stealing or not paying for it, they will press charges and get his information from his credit card, they wouldn't know that he returned the stuff back, and if he told then later on they would believe him for sure.
Thanks for answering

I doubt they'll check cctv and recognise him/know it was him ... they probably wouldn't even be able to figure out when the theft occurred by now
des8 ... anything to add??

what he's thinking of is that when they check their perfume inventory ( because it is expensive) they will find that there's one that is not paid for, then they can check their CCTV the one near the perfume stand, and they can identify him. i'm sure it is only few people who took a bottle of that perfume that day. that happened on Sunday. i'm not sure Debenhams does a daily check or even a weekly inventory check.

So if I saw his photo would I be able to name him and where he lives? Even if they saw him going through the till and tied him with a particular card then the card company cannot give out the details of the card holder, it's against the data protection act. They would have to find the perfume in his possession to be able to take any action.

Thank you for answering. so if they tied him to a card i think they would have his name at least and then can call the police if they caught him on act on CCTV, right? i saw the news about that woman who shoplifted a Channel cream from Boots and refund it from another store and they caught her on camera and arrested her later.

I repeat, if the perfume is not found in his possession then accusing him of shoplifting is pure supposition.

In that case you mentioned no doubt there were pictures of the woman with the stolen item in her possession.

As Ostell says, a credit card company wouldn't give out someone's details.. and having worked in retail briefly I would say it is a 99.99999% probability that even in the remotest chance they checked CCTV and saw your friend paying by card, the cashier would have been so busy that they wouldn't be able to connect the card with the customer!

If you think how many people must pay by card in a Debenham's shop, they would have to have a photographic memory and be able to process hundreds of numbers to work out who's was who's! When you take a card payment manually you physically don't have time to look at each card and say "Oh, hello Mrs Jones.. paying by Mastercard today are we?"

With Chip and Pin cards too, cashiers don't even see the card, just that the payment went through!

I would agree with Kati and say put them in a bag and leave them with an apology somewhere safe.. no details attached!

Thanks for answering and Yeah i agree but what if they saw him put the perfume in his bag on CCTV. i think in that case they can accuse him.

i don't think it is difficult to connect the customer with the card, because if they saw what he bought on CCTV and they have the exact time for the transaction, they can get the details from their system. if they are that well organized. and i agree cashier cant see the card but its number and card holder name is on the store recipient ( i think) so they have a copy from it on their system. and with the time from CCTV it is not hard.
Also like i said of they checked the camera beside the shelf ( where he stole the perfume) they will get him, follow his moments in the store till the cashier and the payment thing, with time stamp on CCTV and if they caught him putting them on the back on CCTV, they can call the police.

Thank you for answering, and sorry, i'm just too scary and he is too scary too. and i'm afraid we thinking it too much, i dont know if Debenham would even notice a missing perfume or not? it depends on how often they check their inventory, on weekly or daily basis

I know that most cases are caught in act inside the store, but is there's a chance that Debenham will check their CCTV and spot a shoplifter and tell the police? or they will only report his photo internally in case he come back again.

even if that happened, they would still have to ask the credit card provider for details (name/address etc...) which is not going to happen as it's a breach of the DPA XX

they probably won't even bother doing that (although I'd suggest he doesn't do it again) ... because they didn't catch him at the time, they've lost out this time xx
