Reference after dismissal

HI

i have recently been dismissed from work due to gross misconduct, loss of trust and respect on employers reputation. Where do i stand with references? Can they state why I was dismissed

They can as long as it is factually correct.
However some employers only ever give neutral references such as start date, end date., role in leaving and salary
