  • Redundancy Confusion

    Hi all, I'm looking for some help regarding a redundancy issue for my wife. id like to get some thoughts and suggestions.
    my wife currently works for a well know bank in the city (you could say government owned) and after 29 years service she is being made redundant . Having recently been through this myself we both realise that these things happen. Such is life! However, I do have some concerns as to how they are handling the situation .
    My wife company are opening a new hub elsewhere in the country , too far to commute. She was given the usual options, she could look for other roles in the bank , take voluntary or be made redundant. She was told that there will be more senior rolls staying in London and on enquiring about these roles she was told " don't concentrate on these position and look further a field" in other words don't apply. Feeling dejected she resigned to the fact that she wasn't wanted so opted to take voluntary.
    Recently she was told to train someone in here office to do her role. Apparently this is just an "interim" arrangement until they fill the roles in the new location. I'm unsure why they didn't keep her on for the interim. While training my wife was told by one of her replacements " we're not sure which one of us is going to be doing your job yet". This started alarm bells in her head.
    She spoke to her line manager( who is staying at the firm) and he said her role is being integrated with another team.(in the interim) until they really decide what is going to it.
    To cut to the chase,It appears it's her who's being made redundant rather than her job . She has a good work record, always has good reviews and her attendance is good. But they are just replacing her for what ever reason.
    shes has no HR representative , in fact Hr haven't even spoken to her , and no legal representation . To me, and with the professional redundancy I've just been through , in comparison they have treated her terribly.
    I may be bias but I believe she is being unfairly dismissed . It's an emotional time so you can imagine how much her confidence has been knocked.

    Sorry to hear about your wife's situation, I have been there myself so do understand. As it sounds like you know already it is the job that no longer exists in a redundancy situation which is established by the fact that the role being done by your wife is being relocated to somewhere that is not commutable to. However her employer still needs to follow a fair process.

    Has your wife been formally accepted for taking voluntary redundancy? Are the "replacements" your wife is training going to the new location?

      Hi. Thanks you for the response. My wife had been accepted for VR . The two girls she is training are both located in Her office and will remain in her office. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my explanation but basically after being told the jobs are going elsewhere she is handing her role to a girl who sits behind her. "Apparently " its only in the interim. ......apparently.
