  • Paid money into someone elses account.

    Hi,

Is anybody able to help please.

I mistakenly paid money from my account to the wrong person, I've contacted the bank who told me it went to a Santander account but could not reveal who the company was without getting court proceeding in motion. My bank tried to recover the money but were told funds not available. I know the company that has the money (New Day) as I traced the account the money was paid into online with the sort code and account number. I contacted New Day many times to try and retrieve the money, they say they cant find it and it may be in an offshore account. after repeat phone calls I realised I was bashing my head against a brick wall.

    What can I do?

    Thanks

      I'm not sure.
When I phoned them regarding the sort code and account number they confirmed they were New day.
I Had a Debenhams card many years ago which defaulted because of illness, they sold the debt on to Arrow. Ithought I was making payments to arrow at £1 month until I mistakenly paid two amounts this account and later found out it was new day, never had any letters to say the debt had been sold on.

May I ask why you are paying Arrow £1 per month for a debt they bought from Debenhams many moons ago? Is there a CCJ or are you simply making token payments to keep them off your back?

Arrow tend to use partners to collect on their behalf such as Restons and Shoosmiths so who are you paying your £1 to (when you're not paying it to NewDay by mistake ) ?

            Hi Di,
Im was paying them £1 a month to keep them off my back, but have stopped paying hoping they would contact me so I could claim the money I mistakenly paid to their account.
No contact as yet. Have been onto financial ombudsman and they are sending New Day a letter requesting money be returned on my behalf. They said that they need to have letter to request refund back to my account and they have eight weeks to respond.

I didn't know it was New Day until I searched and found out the sort code was theirs. I've phoned them many times but they say they can't find my account details.

Well you could send Arrow a s. 77-79 CCA Request to see if this old Debenhams account is enforceable in court (or not)

Might go down that route in the future, just want to get the money back first.

I accidentally paid more than what the debt was originally

How much is the current balance and how much did you pay to a third party (accidentally)?

Rather not put the amounts on here as I'm bit concerned that they follow this site. Don't want them to get heads up. Thank you for your advice.

I was simply trying to establish the facts (round figures would have been sufficient) because accurate advice can't be given based on only part of the story.
