  • How can you make yourself unhierable?

What can an employee do in New York, USA (except for sexual harassment) to not only lose his job but also make himself almost unhireable and his job search as difficult as possible?

Most companies in USA (especially, NYC) are hesitant to give bad references about former employees out of fear of possible lawsuit. So it seems that as long as employee wasn’t prosecuted, he won’t have any trouble finding new job even if he was a racist, drug-addicted sociopath.

Preferably, he was fired after his private e-mails/texts were leaked, exposing some dark secrets, that he tried to hide. Not after he’s done something publicly. What kind of secret could it be?

I thought the thing to do was to refuse a reference.

          Hi, everybody

Thank you for your answers and sorry about misspelled word (English isn’t my first language).

I’m a writer an I’m writing a story about a person who is being blackmailed. If he doesn’t pay up, blackmailer will leak his private texts/e-mails to his employer. They should contain some information that will make that person not only fired, but as unhireable as possible.

So, I decided to ask professionals who know this field better than anybody else.

Recently, there were lots of of people whose careers were ruined because of some racist or sexist stuff they wrote on social media or because of some pictures/videos they posted online. But the big difference is that they voluntarily posted that publicly.

So I assume if someone wrote some horrible stuff, or even described using drugs or something in a private text, he could be fired, but he wouldn’t have any trouble finding new job.

So what kind of information in your opinion could cost him not only his job, but a career as well (except for sexual harassment)?
