  • Changing over from contribution to income related ESA

Hi due to change of circumstances l have to claim for income related ESA but have to claim for my wife too .
Since stepson moved out we are struggling to live on my money alone.
Received the form today once it's filled in how long will the claim take to come through ?. Rang income support and they told me to change over as we can't claim for income support.
How much will we get will it be more than my contribution ESA ?
    Thanks

If you're already getting the premium amount (for long term disability), it should be exactly the same when it converts to ESA income based. It should not take long to change over at all. You will be entitled to free prescriptions etc whilst on income based too. So you will not lose out, Income Support is being phased out and replaced by Universal Credit.

NB: If you're getting support with your mortgage now (if you have one), you'll receive mortgage support for the interest with ESA income based, too.

Re: Changing over from contribution to income related ESA

My wife was a carer for her son when he lived here who now lives across the road. She didn't think she couldn't claim the carers allowance but she can as she cares for him 35 hours a week. We were advised by income support to change over from contribution to income ESA to claim for my wife as a dependent but was told her carers would be deducted from the ESA. Would we be worse off changing over to income based ESA ?
We were told we would get 151 ESA a week plus my wife gets 53.60 as she having a loan deducted of 8.50 a week from her carers.
Would ESA deduct the 61.60 full amount of carers without taking into account the 8.50 deduction loan which they said she had to payback after 4 years.
Because we think we would be worse off if they deduct carers full amount.
As l get 104 a week after child maintenance is taken off.
And my wife gets 53.60 after the 8.50 loan deduction
Surely its more as a couple ?

        This could help - https://www.carersuk.org/help-and-ad...rers-allowance
Carer’s Allowance and other benefits/ income

You cannot usually be paid CA if you receive one or more of the following benefits:
        Contribution-based ESA
        Incapacity Benefit
        Maternity Allowance
        Bereavement or widow’s benefits
        Severe Disablement Allowance
        Contribution-based JSA
        State Retirement Pension (see below)

However, if any of these are paid at less than the amount of CA, you could be paid a small amount of CA on top of the other benefit you get.

Although in most cases you cannot be paid CA if you get one of the benefits above, you will still have ‘underlying entitlement’ to CA if you meet all the conditions. This ‘underlying entitlement’ means that the carer premium or carer addition can be included in calculations for means-tested benefits.

Hi, So you are going to income based ESA as a couple?
I suggest you go through the Entitldto calculator, it will give you details of what you can claim and how much to expect.
The total CA will be in any calculations as it is money you have been paid regardless of what is taken off for any reason.

Re: Changing over from contribution to income related ESA

So l have used the calculator it says taking into account rent etc were untitled to 208 a week ESA . If that's correct be OK but if it's 208 a fortnight then we're stuffed big-time . Can win whatever we do.
Knowing me l filled the calculator i n wrong but all questions were correct.
I thought being a couple money would be more as l thought my ESA was for a single claimant.

Did it say £208 per week ?
Is your step son getting all the benefits he is entitled to now he has moved out of your home?

So your step son is waiting for PIPs?

Sorry but the calculation can only be based on the info you input and I have no access nor do I want access to that.
I in your position would ring your local Welfare office or visit your local CAB, they can help with form filling and also advise on the best way to go forward.

I know and I do understand your worries and frustrations, fact is they can print anything they like on benefits now and can change them just as quick.
I think you really need to sit down and talk to someone and give them a full picture and your finances never leaving out your caring role.
We have as a family used CAB for form filling in and they will be on your side and they will make sure you get the benefits you are entitled to.
The big changes have meant so much for so many, you are not by far on your own.
Someone else may come along and give you a positive reply I can only tell you what I think.
I wish you well and hope you get all you deserve. Enaid x

Hopefully they will help you fill in the application for PIPs, you may have to make an appointment to do so but well worth it imo.
