• Landlord and TV Aerial

Ok knew nothing of this until I got my statement from the letting agent 'new aerial £75' not only should I have been asked about this before the job took place I am not sure it is my responsibility, but will accept if it is.
Apparently the tenant said water came down the aerial and blew up her tv, this was on a Saturday and she was going frantic, she was also going to charge me for a new tv. So to pacify her the letting agent got someone in to renew the aerial at a cost of £75 (which I think is too much anyway).
Any ideas as just to where I stand with this seems a bit bloody iffy to me. Thanks Enaid x

Crazy council should know for sure, but there's a thread on LANDLORDZONE that might be useful xx

Been on landlords and I do think I may be responsible, but I should have been asked before the work was done and can't quite believe her tv blew up

lol,,

Like the ll zone thread says, If the Arial was there at the beginning of the tenancy, it would be classed as a fixture of the property and the LL would have to re-fix it.

But, water coming down the Arial and blowing the TV, mmm i doubt it, and, no, the tenancy own contents insurance is responsible for that, not the LL, or agent..

Am wandering why the agent thinks you have any responsibility anyhow ? unless he thinks you will just pass it on to your LL

Sorry CC I am the LL lol, so I am responsible for the renewal, fair enough. I know the cable can split and water get in but not enough to blow up her tv am sure. I still think £75 is steep too

You'd have thought the tenant would have asked you to repair (so you could get quotes) instead of just going ahead with it

ahhhaa, yes then, generally, although the agent may have reacted a bit fast,

Any of the fixtures and fitting, including sometimes items in the garden, can be the LLs responsibility to replace during the tenancy.

And maybe get the agent to suggest to the tenant, a bit of contence insurance..

MY landlord is part of a local thing where HB tenants can get insurance on a weekly payment scheme (same as the HA's/council tenants can)

Re: Landlord and TV Aerial

Where does the aerial cable end? Is a socket on the wall which the TV connects to with another cable or direct to the TV? Low loss coax is "hollow" but it's pushing it a bit for the water to get down to the plug and then get through the plug into the TV.

From memory its a cable into tv not a box on the wall, she would have had a scrap if she did try and charge me for a new tv though, thanks for reply.

I suspect something has been spilt on the TV and the scapegoat has been the aerial lead.

FWIW, water can cascade down an RF co-ax cable but it will short the signal out before it gets anywhere near the TV.

I don't think "Cascade" would be the word.

Years ago I couldn't work out why my carpet was wet under the telly...pulled the carpets up to check for a leak/damp & nothing. Kept happening. turned out to be the aerial cable, water was dripping out of the end and the socket on the telly was rusty. So it does happen.
