  • Suspended Housing Benefit

    Hi
    I claim housing benefit due to being disabled from an injury. I found out today that the local authority had suspended my payment.

    I asked why and was told that they were reviewing many claims and they suspend them whilst they renew them. I had received an amended notice in May stating a reduction in September, which I am fine about.

    I asked them when the claim was suspended and they said the 29th June, and I did not need to provide any evidence or amendment paperwork to them. The payment was moved to the 20th July.

    I was not informed of this suspension, and my rent is due on the 15th of the month, so it will be late and if pushed further back may, in an extreme case, possibly cause the landlord not to renew my tenancy.

    My question is, should they have informed me, because although it does not cause hardship now, if it continues it will. Do the 1996 housing benefit regulations still apply to the fact they should let you know.

    When I spoke to the very helpful lady she told me a memo had been sent telling them not to send letters to people as to avoid those people becoming stressed.........

    I am fortunate that I can get the rent paid, but what if I couldn't, are they breaching some guideline.

    Many thanks

    Re: Suspended Housing Benefit

    http://t.co/NSoFFsV1GI - that is from 2009 ( Thanks Patrick on Twitter for that) I'm not sure if it has been updated but it does appear there is no obligation on the LA to inform you in advance

      Re: Suspended Housing Benefit

      Another example of how bad they can be;
      One of our clients (sole trader) came to us half in April because his House Benefit was suspended. (He found out because the money did not enter his account) We called the LA and they told us he have to send his last year financial accounts. We did the accounting and mailed it to them. (A week later he received the letter that his HB was suspended) End of May he finally got a response, please send in the accounts from April and May 2015. (May was not finished yet) we made the accounts and mailed it the 1st of June. On 25 June they sent again a letter (received 01 July) if he please can provide the accounts up to 30 June. And still his HB is suspended. We called but they can only tell him that his HB is suspended till he provides the requested documents.
