  • Older debts - any advice most appreciated

Hey Guys, I'm really hoping this place can help me out with a cloud that's been over my head for 10 years now.

When I was 21 I had an amazing job and had an unsecured loan with HSBC. The loan started around £10,000.

Over the next year or so I got heavily into drugs and kept putting up the loan. I remember the last time I did it I went into the bank at 9am and got given my final £4,000 taking the debt to around £25,000.
I clearly remember on the last one having to use all my powers of persuasion to get that 4k. I never really believed that they gave it to me bearing in mind I was high as a kite. However, I was still getting paid fully so maybe the bank looked at it in that way.

I also had a CC with Cap1 for around £2,000 I believe and a phone bill with BT for around £800.

About 3 months later I went to Australia. I went to break my drug addiction which had been daily for 2 years now. This trip saved my life, it ended up being 11 weeks and I came home just before Christmas.
2 weeks later I returned where I lived for 8 years.

I'm now back in Europe, with a wife and 2 children. My family lives in Brussels and I commute every other week.
I'd live to clear up these old problems in my life but not sure how to go about it.

My parents used to receive mail asking after me. I do know that they did contact at least one DCA and advised them that we were totally estranged, they hadn't seen me in 2 years (which was true) and to leave them alone.
I believe that the last letter they received was about 8 months ago and fairly generic.

I believe that BT took a CCJ out on me, but the others didn't.

    Questions.
Were HSBC legally allowed to provide an unsecured loan to myself at such a high amount? I'm certain it was just over £25,000.
If I check my credit history are companies going to suddenly start jumping down my neck?
I don't really mind paying back BT or the Credit Card. I'd rather avoid the HSBC one for now.

I believe that HSBC and the credit card must be Statue Barred now. Another thing is that I'm working for my family business very happily now and will become a director in the next 5 years. Due to this I can't do any kind of bankruptcy and I'm not sure what else I'm legally required to do or not due. I'm debating going to lawyer about all this but that probably isn't the best solution.

I'm going to try and open a basic bank account with Barclays today, hopefully they will accept my proof of address as a letter I received from the Tax office.
That is the only correspondence of any kind that I have, period. It's like I don't exist in this country. All my wages have been being paid into my fathers account.

I want to sort out my life now and clear up all that I can.

I can't even work out how to do a credit check as they all seem to ask for a debit card, which I don't even have...hence my trip to Barclays.

Any advice at all would be much appreciated!

How long ago did you last acknowledge (or make payments towards) these debts?? If it was more than 6 years ago, they would be Statute Barred .....
Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

It doesn't matter where your journey begins, so long as you begin it...
