  • Council tax arrears advice needed

    Dear All,
I have just discover that my council tax for 5 years in the previous property was not paid.
We are a couple with little baby baby now who moved outside London to cut the living and company expenses.
Due to unpaid invoices from several clients we were sadly forced to close our company 4 years ago which leaves us with some debt and difficult situation to manage. Unfortunately I was not aware of the council tax areas which starts from 2008 when we actually moved to the property as a couple. My other half did not want me to have even more stress...Please advice how can I act and what are the possibilities. I logged into account on line and I can see all the areas start from 2008 including court charges etc. For last year I am dealing with all bills and our council is paid on time but I am not able to deal with £6000 from the past. Please advice what can be done, we can hardly mange nowadays slowly paying back all debts etc but will not be able to add additional £6000 to the "glass". Please advice as I am running out of ideas.

I have just called debt helpline. I have been told that if it was a court order and council was not able to enforce the payment that means that after 2 years will not be valid any more. it doesn't sound right. I have heard that after 6 years your debt is "gone" but 2 years? please advice. I need to know how to act and what are my rights before getting in touch with council.
