Where do I stand regarding overtime?

At the moment my wife works part time during the day, I work full time, with the kids off in summer we can't afford childcare costs, my wife is giving up work and has got a part time job in the evenings after I come so I will be looking after the kids, which means no childcare costs.

Now here is the problem, I have an overtime clause in my contract which I posted about before where does this leave me now? I will not be able to do it some nights of the week due to caring for my children, and we have no one else. Did I read somewhere about an allowance for caring for children?

No. You read about the right to ASK for flexible working for parental responsibility and it isn't guaranteed because the employer can refuse the request for business reasons. And you get the right to ask only once per year. Any agreed change is absolute - you cannot vary it to suit your requirements.

Sorry - but what answer are you expecting to that question? I am not being funny here but you decided to take the job and stay in the job, and your wife decided to go out to work part-time. I do appreciate that it's hard and that money is tight for people. But you knew that you had a contractual obligation to work overtime before your wife took a job that left the children at home without any child care. So I'm not clear how any of us can answer. "Baby-sitter"?

Did I miss the part about being tricked into the job? I applied for a totally different job which never actually existed, I got in to discover I'd got this job, probably why it wasn't advertised was because no one would take it. I have commitments IE kids, I'm missed various things because of this overtime, my 2 colleagues have no ties, I do. They have managed to snare the wrong guy for this job but they don't seem to give a shit and I'm stuck between a rock and hard place.
