  • Can we bring jobs back to UK?

Did you know that you have the right to speak to a UK person when you call a company’s call centre for a service or enquiry?.
I've done this when I simply couldn't understand the person talking to me.

But I never realised that this is a proactive way of bringing jobs back to the UK!!.

Do the following when you phone any customer service operation that is based in a foreign Country. I have done this twice and it works!

Any time you call a company about a problem with a credit card, bank account, computer, product, etc and you are answered by a person in a call centre abroad such as in India, try this:

As soon as you realise that the customer service person is not in the UK (you can always ask if you are not sure about the accent), please very politely (and I mean very politely - this is not about trashing other cultures) say,
"I'd like to speak to a customer service person in the United Kingdom."

The rep might suggest talking to his/her manager, but, again, politely say, "Thank you, but I'd like to speak to a customer service person in the UK ..."

YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED to a rep in the UK.
It only takes a few seconds to have your call re-directed to the UK .

This evening when I was redirected to a UK rep, I asked again just to make sure - and yes, she was in Swansea.

Imagine if tomorrow, every UK citizen requested a UK rep, and how that would impact on the number of extra UK jobs needed.

Imagine what would happen if every UK citizen insisted on talking to only UK phone reps from this day on.

Remember - the goal would be to restore jobs back here at home in the UK - not to be abrupt or rude to person overseas.

Individually, please tell 10 people you know and tell them to tell 10 people they know, it could happen!!!!

I have to admit in my line of business I am always getting through to offshore call centres, luckily most companies have a way of avoiding them by dialling a certain code and you can go straight to a UK operator.

I just wish for once that the UK would stand up for itself (people power), we seem to just accept what is thrown at us from the large Corporate bodies, these systems have only been set up to enable profit rather than for customer satisfaction, no matter what they tell us!! (Public relation spin)
Only by refusing to accept their systems will it change back to what the public actually require......'service'....

I totally agree with the above and think it's a good idea, BUT.....

Have you stopped to consider why they have oversaes call centres - it's because they get cheap labour. If everyone insists on speaking to someone in the UK the price of the product will rise in at least direct proportion to the increase in wage costs. Is everyone prepared to pay the extra cost in order to achieve this aim?

Thanks Caspar, I see where you are coming from but with every day we approach April and the slash and burn policies of the 'Coalition' (male group of cheeters...I do like that one!!), the wage structure of the UK becomes more competitive because the 'private sector' has taken a fall in income through 2010, yet they are supposed to be taking up the slack from the job losses of the 'public sector' that is coming if you believe the 'spin'.

Seriously, somewhere down the line of the next 4 years the public are going to be clamouring for jobs as unemployment is rising so quickly, and maybe the 18 to 24 year old 1 million unemployed could fill these posts, call centres are not what you would describe as highly qualified industrial skilled personnel, but would provide a position of responsibility and personal esteem for a generation of youth that is with every day feeling from 'bad to worse' about themselves because of the lack of involvment in society...

Again I agree. My brother holds a very senior position in the civil service and he has spent the last fortnight travelling the country making 25000 civil servants redundant, and according to him there'll be more to come!
