next door to me is a rented house. The problem is.My daughter sleeps in the atic bedroom.the wall to next door is all damp and gone yellow in colour. Its painted white But you can see the yellow threw the white.Ihave told on a couple of ocassions but he wont do anything about it.My daughter has astma. And its making her cough during the nite. There is no heating in there. But she does a have a portable heater. Were can i go from here? This has been going on for years. But when winter comes its bad specially when it rains.I am sick of painting over it to hid it.Its on the side of his chimney pot where the rain comes in you can hear it dripping.

Does the wall go black over the top of the paint as well as the yellow behind the paint? Is it brick or has it been plastered/boarded ?

Is the chimney solely part of next doors property ? If so and there is a problem with leaking then your neighbour's landlord is responsible for fixing it. If he's refusing then you would probably be looking at getting a surveryor in and invoicing your neighbour. Theres another thread on here about a neighbours cellar causing problems...will try find a link there should be some handy bits in there for you. ( edit: water in cellar (neighbour problem) - Legal Beagles )

You can get a kind of sealant to paint on walls which helps stop damp coming through which you apply before painting, works with the yellow, but if you get the black then that is due to the inside of the room being unheated - short bursts of heat don't do the same job as low constant heating and ventilation.

I have a similar problem in my largest bedroom and was making my kids poorly, so they now have the smaller room which isn't damp, and I have the bigger room (handy that lol) and as I am in it more it tends to stay warmer and so far this year the damp seems to be under control.
