  • Bus Fares - only allowed two children ?

Weird one on the bus yesterday. On sundays we have Stagecoach buses rather than Trent buses. I don';t often go on bus on Sundays as its a couple hours between services rather than half hour in the week.

    Anyhow.
In the week I pay, £3.60 adult supersaver return, £1.80 kids supersave return x 3 kids = total of £9.00
Sundays I have to pay - £4.20 adult return, £1.20 kids return x 2, and another £4.20 adult return. Total £10.80

I hadnt noticed before cause i just expected it to be more expensive on Sundays and had a new bus driver who charged me the £4.20 and 3 x £1.20 then had a row with the return bus driver who wanted me to pay the extra £3.

Apparently this is because you are only allowed two children per adult ?

This has pee'd me off, having three kids, and buses arent exactly easy to find out what the fares are.

Looks like they do the same for under fives (who should get free travel) Evening Telegraph: News

Written to them to complain, and also complained about the bus breaking down while I was at it, let you know what they come back with.

    Dear Sirs

I would like to make a complaint about your child fare 'policy'. Why am I only allowed two children ? What am I supposed to do with the third ? It is hard enough to afford the bus into town without you deciding to charge full adult rate for my 10 year old (taking it up to £10.80) Maybe I should leave her to catch the next bus alone? or leave her at home ?

Thankfully I don't have to take Stagecoach buses very often as they are only inflicted on us on Sundays - My children, who I will NOT be leaving alone at home, or leaving to travel alone, are 10,8 and 7, so I guess we just won't be going out on Sundays anymore.

Trent Buses charges child rates on, lets see, CHILDREN ! Not on how many I have and have to manage on my own.

Can some one please explain the reasoning behind this policy ?

Another issue, which I would most likely have let go if it hadn't been for my anger over these charges - the bus broke down, left us sitting for 25 minutes while we waited for an engineer to come and sort out the doors, the driver made NO attempt to inform us of the situation, how long we might be stuck, if another bus was coming or an engineer. If we had known we would have been sitting for so long we could have got off and let the kids run about a bit while we waited. This was the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Bus.

    So disappointing all round really.

    Regards

I would also contact the Evening Telegraph with your concerns. Ridiculous that they attempt to charge adult prices for a 10 year old.

        Excellent got a reply

        Dear Ms Amethyst,

I am emailing in response to the email that I received with concern regarding our child fare policy and the breakdown of our 192 Service on 9th August.

Firstly, I am very sorry to hear of the inconvenience you and your children experienced on that day. Unfortunately we do occasionally have breakdowns and require engineers to attend these breakdowns which leads to delays for our customers- something for which I wish to apologise . It certainly appears that my driver failed in their duty to ensure you were well informed and cared for during the 25 minute wait for recovery. We have a rigorous customer service training package that all our drivers undertake and I am disappointed that it appears to have failed to make the indended impact on this particular driver. Thank you for passing on this valuable information and rest assured I will be using it to ensure this particular driver knows how to deal with a breakdown should one arise again.

I would now like to turn to our policy on Child Fares. We allow two children under the age of five to travel free with an adult guardian and thereafter require a further adult guardian for every two under five. Any child of five or over up to the age of 16 pays a child rate and there is no upper limit to how many can travel irrespective of the number of adults that travel with them.

In your case as you have three children aged ten, eight & seven none of these could have travelled free (as I'm sure you were aware), but all three should have been charged child fare. If as you say your ten year old was charged adult fare, then you were incorrectly charged and I must again apologise profusely. If you would be so kind as to confirm this in a reply to me then I will indeed take it forward and again add this to the other issue to bring up with my member of staff. Please could you also confirm where you boarded for your journey to Mansfield and the fare that your ten year old was charged.

I look forward to hearing from you

        Yours sincerely

Re: Bus Fares - only allowed two children ?

Hmmmm well the thing is I have been paying £10.80 since i moved here on Sundays. I only know about this because last Sunday I only got charged £8.00, assumed they must have reduced charges or something. When I got on the bus to come back, I got this bus driver who said the first driver who I got the returns off had done it wrong and I needed to pay the extra £2.80, which I didnt do and chatted to him instead about this policy.

I don't understand the free under 5's policy - my lot were all under 5 for about 3 years, so would I have had to find a spare adult to come on or pay a full adult fare for one ? its not clear is it so will try find that out.

Will also ask him to confirm the price I should be paying on Sundays for the various journeys I do.

Am very impressed with his nice and speedy response so far though
