  • Meterpay credit card surcharge

Ive been in my flat for nearly a year and have a smart meter for electric fitted by the landlord. Never had any problems with it. The meter is from a company called Meter Pay and it is their site I have to log on to in order to pay for electric. The only way to pay for electric is online with a credit card.

For almost 12 months I have used my credit card on this site and never been charged anything extra. Today I go to pay for my electric and they have added a 35p credit card surcharge. There is no other payment option to avoid this charge. Are they allowed to add this surcharge for using a credit card when that is the only way of paying?

Many companies add a charge if you use a credit card, based on the charge the credit card company make for its use. Have you got a debit card you could use ? They are usually without charge. The charge would be deemed a reasonable amount.

They won't be allowed to add a surcharge after 13 January 2018 as they're being banned thanks to the EU

Have you received any notification of a change in their terms and conditions detailing their new charge ( seems an odd time to introduce a charge ) - or is the surcharge for specific value payments ( like under £5 ? )

I pay the same amount every 2 weeks to top up my electric using the same credit card and have never had a surcharge added before. This is the first time its happened. I was never given notice except on their site as I went to pay; there is a little message at bottom of the payment page which I didnt notice until i pressed the pay button and it asked me to confirm the amount, it was only then i saw the 35p added so went back and then saw the message.

Even if it is a fair charge I find it strange they add it now after so long. Either I should have been charged it from day 1 or, they trying to make a bit extra money before the surcharge ban comes into force. As its not long till January I will just pay it and forget about it.

        Thanks for all your help

Before i posted on here i messaged the company that takes payment. They replied and said they only supply the meters and a payment portal. Its the landlord that receives the money, sets the tariff and adds any surcharges. I guess if the surcharge ban applies to the landlord he will just increase the tariff.
