Uber will not be issued a new private hire licence, Transport for London (TfL) has said.
TfL concluded the ride-hailing app firm was not fit and proper to hold a London private hire operator licence.
It said it took the decision on the grounds of "public safety and security implications".
Confirming it would appeal against the decision, Uber said it showed the world "far from being open, London is closed to innovative companies".
TfL's concerns include Uber's approach to carrying out background checks on drivers and reporting serious criminal offences.

Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.

I hope not, I know the Hackney Carriage office is down the road from where I grew up and last time I was home the queue!!

there was a sign saying "We cannot deal with complaints about Uber!"

          Yes they will likely appeal.

It's likely their license will remain pending appeal which will hopefully be fast-tracked.

tfl says it has compelling evidence on the "fit and proper" criteria from what I've seen has been made public so far.

At the moment this is a London issue which may lead the way to other regions/cities/countries worldwide questioning the Uber verification of the drivers of vehicles etc etc

Maybe ask @Joanna C to comment?

Apparently Uber started a petition which has attracted 474,000 signatures so far. I'm not sure that a commercial company should be able to canvas support in this way and I don't find it credible that nearly half a million people (presumably mostly Londoners) signed it in 24 hours.

Because if you read her Twitter you'll see that she's heavily involved in taxi licensing mostly acting for the drivers in appeals against the local authority.
