  • Taking the Proverbial

Well as some of you know I am on ESA which means that the DWP have decided I am unfit to work but well enough to take steps to return to work.
Anyway poundworld have opened a shop where I live and were looking for staff. They are offering 8 and 16 hour contracts with overtime all done through intraining one of the work place providers.
Anyway I put my name down saying I wanted 8 hours to see how it went, went for interview and they wanted a work trial for what I was led to believe was 2 days . I thought it was a bit much but if I wanted the job what could I do

Yesterday I went and they told me that it was actually a 5 day work trial , so 40 hours of unpaid work for an 8 hour job. If I was on JSA and desperate for a job I would have had no choice as sanctions would have kicked in. When I reminded them I only wanted 8 hours they looked at me like they had trodden in something. Needless to say I told them where to stick it

I just thought I would vent , this is pure exploitation. If a company wants to employ people they should pay them for the work done not get 40 hours free work out of them first . They have 250 stores so even if they had two people each week working at 50% efficiency that is giving the company £60000 of free labour each week .

    Am I over reacting ?

    Re: Taking the Proverbial

:jaw:This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. In what world do they think that is ok? Is this the new slavery? Would they even pay expenses such as lunch and travel to work?
I have heard of companies that do not pay you during initial training or induction but for 5 days work! They will be on TV soon with a sour look on their faces saying ‘we have all these vacancies but no one applying. The trouble with people today is they do not want to work’
Was the person telling you that you would have to work for 5 days without pay wearing a mask or a clown’s suit?
Ahhh, maybe you applied on April 1st.msl:
This is not taking the proverbial –this is completely****ing it.

Totally agree! It's beyond ridiculous! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: Why should the government allow big companies like that to enjoy free labour? OUTRAGEOUS!

            Oh that is beyond belief!
In the Guardian Thursday 3 July 2014 we read that Poundland reports a 23% rise in pre-tax profits to £36.8m. As jon pointed out they are saving thousands on free labour each week. If that is not profiting from slave labour I don’t know what is!:whip:
The UK is giving millions in aid to developing countries; yes these are countries where people are starving but here we expect people to work for nothing and that is literally nothing not just sarcasm, we have queues for food banks where hungry people are begging for food and we have OAPs living rough. Is it me? Am I missing something here?:twitch:

I am glad its not just me.
For reference this is poundworld not poundland but i suisn't even work experience t the same applies. This isn't even work experience it is part of the interview process to see if you can stack shelves.
I can assure you, if i was confident that i could work full time i wouldnt be applying for this. I am not saying its an easy job or anything just not my thing.
When I spoke to the intraining coordinator he really didn't give a ####

While I'm well acquainted with Poundland and the 99p Stores, I'd never heard of Poundworld! Never seen a branch, maybe they only operate up norf... :noidea:

http://poundworld.net/about-us/ Poundworld used to be known as Everything's a £1 but changed names in 2004, is Yorkshire-based and also owns 'Discount UK'. They even have Poundworld Express stores!!

http://www.poundland.co.uk/about-us/ Poundland was founded in 1990 with it's first store in Burton-upon-Trent. They have stores called 'Dealz' in the Republic of Ireland (since 2011) and are owned by Advent International ( http://www.adventinternational.com/Pages/Home.aspx ) - if they haven't been sold on again since 2002.

I would say that they are poundlands slightly less desirable cousin. The layout is very similar to poundland but from what I see they lack the buying power to get the big names to manufacturer for them.
But stuff them all as from 29th sept I will be a student
