Pensioner who foiled phone con urges everyone to be on guardApr 28 2009

A HATTON pensioner is warning the public to be on their guard after a fraudulent phone caller tried to cheat her out of £550.
Paula Leary, aged 75, received a call at her home from a “foreign sounding man” who claimed to be from her bank, the HSBC. He said that over the years Mrs Leary had been paying too much in bank charges and that under a new Government ruling, such funds were now being paid back. In Mrs Leary’s case, this was supposedly £550.
Mrs Leary said: “My suspicions were roused because I have never been overdrawn. When the man asked for my account details so that the money could be paid to me I said I would first check with my bank and he hung up.
“The HSBC told me that this sort of thing is happening all the time and that you should never reveal card numbers or account details over the phone.
“I really want to stop other people from being conned in this way.

Unfortunately it works on occassions for the scammers and thats why it continues.

I would suggest that anyone who recieves one of these calls notes the time of the call being recieved and then immediately contacts BT to get the callers number and then passes this on to their bank to investigate further or the Police. I doubt 1471 would provide the number as its prob withheld, but its worth a try also.
