  • Old Policy Matured

Hi my husband received a letter stating an old policy he took out 23+yrs ago is now matured and ready to be claimed.

Now this policy was taken out when he purchased a property with his ex. They split, he left and she gave up the property so the policy was only paid into for a while.

The letter states he needs the policy number to collect, which he doesn't have. Is there a way of him getting this information? Also, not sure what happened in the end with the property - so is there a chance that by trying to claim his share (which is probably not a lot) he could be liable for anything that may have been left outstanding on the property?

    thanks

Presumably this is a whole life policy as a term life would have been cancelled following non payment of premiums.
As premiums were only paid for a short time I'm surprised that there will be a payout as charges are front loaded and very little will have been put into investment as the life cover takes precedents over investmment
Who sent him that letter? If the life company has written to him, why does he need the policy number?
The company should be able to tell him the number!

I would want a lot more info from the letter writer before I divulged any information at all.

Thanks Des8. The letter was from prudential and says he needs to supply policy number to claim...we assume to prove it's his policy. He says it was only paid into for 2 yrs and probably not worth anything

If the Pru know who your husband is, and he can prove his identity, I do not understand why he needs to produce the policy number.

It is not unusual for policyholders to forget the number or even the fact they had the policy, but the companies have systems in place to identify claimants correctly.

There is even a register to help people find unclaimed assets https://www.uar.co.uk/Customer/Home

I would go back to the Pru, giving whatever evidence he has to prove his identity.
If they still won't help a free complaint to the FoS might produce results, but even if there is a pot I doubt its contents will be life changing.
