    can one write one's own will? does anyone have a good template for a general will?

    You can write your own will and there are any number of sites which claim to be able to sort it for you.

    Whilst it is relatively simple, if there is anything remotely complicated about the estate, I would always suggest you get a professional to do it for you - by professional I mean legally qualified. Will writing is not a "regulated activity" so anyone can set themselves up as a will writer with few if any qualifications.

    If you can wait until October, it is "free wills month" when lots of high street solicitors will draft your will for free. It is organised by a group of charities (who obviously do it in the hope of receiving a legacy) but you are not under any obligation to leave anything to the charity.
