  • Getting first time insurance

My brother is 44 years old. He passed his driving test 21 years ago but never actually bought a car because he just didn't need to. The only time he's driven since then has been on the odd occasions when he's needed to hire a vehicle for a day. Now he wants to buy a car. He only wants a cheap runaround. He's gone on autotrader and seen a car he wants for 1k.

They have a link above the car that leads to an insurance comparison site. He's filled it out very honestly and stated that although hes held his licence for 21 years he's never actually been a car owner or a named driver on any other policy so he doesn't have a no claims bonus. He understand that because of this he'll be treated as a new car driver and the insurance will be a premium. However, the quotes the comparison sites are all more than the cost of the car.

I don't drive and have never driven so I haven't got a clue about this sort of thing. He only wants third party insurance so he can take his new (old banger) on the road but the cheapest quote they're giving him on comparethemarket for a car that only costs 1k is 2k. Can this be right? If not, where do you go to get a reasonable quote?
Nothing I say should be taken as qualified expert advice. I am not an expert in anything.

If you decide to act on anything I have posted you agree not to hold me liable in any way.

If you are unsure then you need to take proper advice from someone who is an expert.

Firstly please be careful when buying a car on line there are major scams and we have plenty info on here about the subject and how to buy safely.
The insurance comparison sites may not be totally accurate from what I have heard and maybe your brother should do a bit of research himself and have a look at specialist insurers for over 40s or even ring up a motoring organisation for advice and reccommendations
