  • Council Tax Attachment of earnings

Hi, please bare with me as I'm new to this site but wanted to ask advice.

I I already have 2 attachment of earnings for council tax as I'm catching up on previous years after being a mature student. Unlike many, im happy to have these as I know it needs paying and this way at least I know it gets paid. However, due to the knock on effect of this money being taken I'm now in arrears with this years council tax and just received a letter giving me 14 days to pay in full (which I cant) or send in employer info or it will be sent to bailiffs. I really don't want it to go to bailiffs as I've had experience with them before and wanted extortionate amounts making it impossible to pay. Will the council combine any attachments of earnings orders? I know one of my AOE will be paid in a couple of months but not sure what to do in mean time, any help would be appreciated. Planning on phoning council Monday.

    many thanks

    Hi, and welcome to LB!
I'm not 100% sure, but I understood that you could only have 2 AoEs at a time being taken out of your wages (correct me if I'm wrong tho')
As you are being placed in financial hardship due to the two you already have, it might be an idea to see if you can get them consolidated as it should work out cheaper for you if there was only one payment :tinysmile_grin_t: (your local CAB would be able to advise you on how to go about this)
I would also advise you to keep everything in writing (emails and letters can be used as proof of agreements and are easy to look back at if you need to :tinysmile_twink_t2

I am sure you will get more advice from other knowledgeable Beagles too

As Kati says they can only run 2 AoE at one time, but if one becomes paid up then they can then attach another. You must make them aware you are presently paying 2 AoE. get in touch with your local Councillor(s) and they can start the ball rolling on Monday for you.

Thank u Kati & Ploddertom. I'm just worried that as there is already 2 AEO they will automatically send current year to bailiffs. Also (don't mean to be ignorant) but what will my local councillor do? Council uses Rossendales who are a law unto themselves!

They cannot use Bailiffs whilst the 2 AeO are in operation. Is this a case of the AeO being for a different Local Authority to where you now live, if so then you must notify your present Council of this? Your Councillor can intervene and find out exactly what is going on, best initial contact is by phone and they should be available 7 days per week up until 9pm in my view.

The two AOE I currently have are for previous years council tax at my current address and the letter received today to provide employment details or pay £900+ for the current years council tax at the same address. Same council. As this is a different years council tax will they not treat it as a separate debt?
