  • Leaving a cab with two other passengers in without paying

If someone orders a taxi then offers to share it with two other people going to roughly the same destination, is it illegal for the person to leave the taxi just before the destination is reached without paying?

Possibly worth noting the taxi driver is paid in full at the final destination by the other two passengers.

What was the agreement between the parties regarding payment for the taxi ?

And no it's not illegal, the three people agreed to share a taxi, presumably there was some discussion about payment/cost. The taxi would have cost the same had there been three or one person, although if it went out its way a bit to drop off the first person who got out it may have increased the total journey amount, but it'd be an agreement between the three of you.

An assumed agreement of splitting the payment, although no direct verbal one. Essentially a "Would you like to share this taxi with me it'll be cheaper for the three of us", and then "yeah sure why not".

And it didn't go out of it's way, the taxi was stopped on it's way to the destination given by the other two passengers.

Sounds normal.... what's happened to raise the concern about the legalities ?

Guessing the first person to leave the cab didn't pay and the others are asking for payment?

Haha no it would be about £2.50 to each other passenger in the car, so hardly worth pressing for repayment. However yes, it is because the first person left without paying.

They were just interested to know if it was illegal! Like making off without payment, or fraud or something similar.

Thankyou anyway, for your quick responses!
