  • bullying at work

    Hi all

I wonder if anyone could give me some advice. I have worked for my current employers for 5 years, and have been in my present role nearly 3 years. Shortly after starting my current role I realised I had made a mistake as my line manager was a bully. He would be highly negative, and constantly putting me down. After 2 months I went to see HR. I spoke to them, they contacted my line managers boss, and steps were put into place. He did however question why I had gone to HR rather than speaking to him directly.

Things did settle down for me for a while, however I did find out later that he was intimidating another member of the team. She later went off long term sick for stress and left shortly afterwards. Two other members of the team also started suffering from stress, one taking many weeks off. Shortly after this the bullying started again. In my 1:1's he would pick up the smallest of issues, and would be constantly putting me down. Over time this ate away at my self confidence. I tried speaking to HR once again, but felt they werent listening. I also tried speaking to my line managers boss, but they are buddies and he was very defensive.

Things started coming to a head towards the end of last year, where I spent most of my working days in the ladies toilet in tears. A manager from another team, noticed the change in my behaviour, from a bubbly cheerful person to a teary self doubting person, and persuaded me to go to talk to a new person in HR. I recounted incidents that had happened over the years and how they made me feel. The new HR Rep was very responsive, and advised me to take out a grievance. With her support she persuaded me to speak to the new director, who also offered his support and prompted me to take out a grievance.

It was at this point my family talked me into speaking to my GP. She immediately signed me off sick with Anxiety and Depression and prescribed anti depressants. I took 3 weeks off work, before deciding to face the music and return. On my return I discovered my line manager had since resigned due to another job offer, and on my return they took the decision to put him on Garden Leave.

HR still accepted my grievance, and I was told that it would be investigated, on my return from Annual Leave which I was due to go on at the end of the week. I have now returned to work, and nothing has happened. My line manager, is still on garden leave, and his termination period ends at the end of this week. No one from the business has contacted me for a statement so the procedure I dont believe has commenced. What should happen now? I am willing to give a statement, but they wont be able to investigate as my line manager would have left the company so they wouldnt be able to get anything from him. Over the years he has marked me down in appraisals. I clearly need these reversing so to clear my name as I have carried out some really good work which was never recognised.
