  • employer telling me i will have a change or role and duties and a cut in pay

my director has informed me verbally that he intends to bring into the company a new dedicated sales person. for this reason, my role and duties will change, part of them (the sales part i am doing together with many other duties) will go to this new person, and so I will have a cut in salary.
i contested this decision verbally to him and HR and said that i will not agree to it. I told him that because our business is growing, we do need a dedicated sales person and re-allocate some duties accordingly, but not at my expense in having a salary cut.
nothing has been put in writing, but he has already interviewed this other person and he has accepted the job i am told.
the salary cut figure he is proposing are up to a third, so not a small amount.
the problem is that we do need to re-organize our management and duties, as the business is growing rapidly, and so we do need additional help in the form of a dedicated sales person.
the sales duties are done currently by me, shared with my director, but the work load has increased a lot and i am struggling to keep track of all the different projects, so in principle i do welcome an additional sales manager, but i don't want to accept a cut in salary.
what are the best steps for me to take to prepare to contest this proposed cut in salary?
    thank you
