  • Charge received for incomplete tax return. year 2008/09!

Hello. I have received a letter in the post from HMRC stating I owe them £200 due to not completing my self assessment in 2010. This is the first letter I have received. I stopped working self employed in 2006 or maybe 2007. I remember completing a self assessment online returning a zero income although I don't remember which year that related to . I have moved house a few times since then however have been a police officer for the past 10 years and been in the same house now for 3 years and the one before that for 5. It would have been simple for them to get my address to notify me of the requirement. Do I need to pay the fee?? Is there any time limit on HMRC sending out these requests? So I still need to complete a tax return for that year? (I'm still not sure I didn't do it it was so long ago!) Please help!!

i think I have lost the letter which doesn't help so can't attach an image.
